In many offices and corporate reception areas in Japan, you can find a scene quite different from that of Korea.
Unstaffed reception spaces equipped only with a telephone or intercom are fairly common. This system is made possible by Japan’s distinctive culture of prior appointments: surprise visits without notice are rare, and visitors typically announce their purpose by phone upon arrival and directly call the person in charge. In a society that values orderly and self-directed behavior, there is a shared trust that visitors will follow basic procedures with courtesy, allowing such unattended systems to take root naturally. The reception process is handled by the staff member personally coming out to greet and guide the visitor. In this kind of system, a waiting area for visitors is essential. RKRN’s side table was placed in front of the sofa in this waiting area, helping to create a comfortable environment where visitors can relax while they wait.
